Years ago, if you wanted to learn from Guru Deva, the man who gave us Vedic Meditation, you traveled to India and paid him a week's wages. He realized early on that students who learned for free didn't stick with the practice, so he charged student's a week's wages. A grain farmer brought a week's grain, a king a week's riches. This ensured the practice available, and the fee meaningful, to anyone interested in learning.
We've adopted that to a sliding scale. A week's wages can be a good guideline, but ultimately you decide where on fall on the scale from $495 - $ 2495. It's an honor system, determined by what is a meaningful amount to each student.
